I made an mTDI swap in a VW Vanagon (T25) camper. The guy took the freeway and went pedal-to-metal for almost an hour until the smaller coolant line connected to the head on the short side broke, unfortunately it got torn by the drive shaft. This camper has the lowest geared transmission out there, so when the coolant line was punctured he had about 4000-4100 RPM. Engine got empty, got hot and the head gasket blew. With that RPM heat must have been buffered in the head before he went into panic mode.
I feel a bit sorry for him and of course it was my fault that the coolant line wasn't strapped, so I promised to help him fixing it (we'll get a better tranny at the same time). But what worries me is warping. The head could have been damaged, I haven't seen or heard about a warped TDI head so far. Of course, there are stories on the Internet but local guys have never seen one. The thing is that I don't know for how long he went with a dry engine, he doesn't seem to have a real clue either. Maybe the excessive heat acted like an annealing process by itself and the head is "self treatened", I don't know...
Is warpage something I should worry about?
Should I have the head pressurized to find leaks or cracks?
Just need some moral support here...
