Well can you?
My Bentley says that the turbo must be removed before you can take off the head. But it looks like it you should be able to pull it all out as one piece with the manifolds and turbo attached.
On a MK2 and T3, 1.6TD.
Yes, that's how I do it. It's a little heavy so I stand over it in the bay so I don't wreck my back.
You could use an engine hoist/crane to lift it up too.
Might save you or car from any complications.
Thanks, I have access to a crane.
I was wondering if it might not clear the firewall, because the mk2 has far less clearance than the mk1 but I will try pulling it as one piece.
There's plenty of room, even if you have to pull it upwards to clear headstuds.
No problem with clearance. Last time I used a crane and the head came out with manifolds and turbo.

Exactly what I did a few days ago removing my head. Trickiest part was getting that retarded oil drain hose out nicely.. but with some patience it came. Bentley says to remove the oil drain hose from the turbo first but I don't think it's possible when it's on the head, on my T3 turbo.
You need a hand this weekend? I've never done the removal with the turbo.

I started yesterday afternoon, had it off by dinner time.
It was heavier than I expected but the turbo doesn't really make anything more difficult.
It sits on my workbench awaiting whatever comes next, I probably won't have all the parts to put it back together this weekend so I guess I'll be driving my Dodge pickup for a while.
I'll let you know if I need to take up your offer though.

mk2 has MORE room between the engine and firewall..
i just pulled an engine from a mk1, and installed it in a mk2.. it fits much better in the mk2.. lots more room.
Yes the head isn't too bad, but the turbo and manifold are heavy. I hope to work on my exhaust tomorrow.
