Why is it so hard to find an old idi

this is annoying as hell, i have been searching for a VW mk2-3 TD for 4+ months and keep coming up SoL....

every time i find one its either beat to *** or or the person thinks their half assed quality high mileage car is worth a fortune

I don't get it either and most people dont know the first thing about working on them. And to own one u gotta know someone who can work on them u gotta know how to work on them  or u gotta be really dumb

Depends on what part of the country. Southern Ontario and BC salt their roads to $#!t. Prairie provinces use very little salt. Of course nearly all the engines/cars are high mileage, but compared to cars built in the last 5 years, they are very rebuildable.

Don't go into Eastern Canada to get a car... there's more rust than car for the mk2/3s.

I see them turning up in the LA/inland empire area from time to time, for around $2500, mk1 turbo diesel Jettas and n/a diesels but mk2 turbo diesels are pretty rare. Mk3 IDI diesels were, NEVER sold in the United States, as far as I know, so, odds are you won't find one, although I have actually seen one for sale around here, probably came from Canada.

It took me 6 months to find an mk2 I liked and there are times I wish I would have bought something else.

rebuilding helps if you have a garage to store parts for a period of time

i have looked in CA alot of people want to much money for crap, lot of what i have seen people want 6500+ for faded pain high miles trashed interior, 6500 can get me a newer TDi (2000-2002)

Why not buy a n/a you like with a bad motor and swap a td lump in?

I personally am frustrated by all the 914's I see for sale in reasonable condition with minimal rust are at least $5000.

wow those are costly down there...bought mine for $800....high kms tho....but picked up a refreshed engine...swaped out engines in less than 5hrs in the drive way.... now i have 3 spare engines lol....love having extra parts...give it time...a good deal will come along...always dose for those who keep looking.

to be honest that seem more like the right price considering what i sold mine for, and i constantly hear people picking these up for 400-800 and yet i cant find anything that really peaks my interest
