K24/T3 turbo on AAZ
« on: November 24, 2011, 05:44:52 am »
this is probably for the Canadian posters here: what is the best way to get a K24 or a T3 from a 1.6 TD onto an AAZ engine? That is, is there a combination of factory parts that make it all a bolt on or do certain parts have to be fabricated? Is the early AAZ/K14 exhaust manifold better than the 1.6 TD unit? Replies from people who have actually done this modification please. Thanks.

i'm planning on it next spring and have done lots of reseach.

i plan to use the 1.6 manifold with the T3 attached. its pretty well bolt on besides the oil drain. your best bet from what i've seen and read is to use a pipe tap to tap the flange on the turbo and use a braided line from the turbo down to the block.

you will also need to get or fab up a new down pipe due to the exhaust having a square flange/bolt pattern vs the rectangle one of the AAZ

The 1.6 exhaust manifold and T3 is a direct bolt-on and makes a great engine spectacular. I used a custom braided oil feedline which I got made at a hydraulic shop for $20. The drain fittings are below. Top one is the turbo oil outlet fitting and the bottom one (also available from the hydraulic shop) goes into the block to replace the old banjo bolt. Then just craft up a stainless flex line to connect the 2.
Add a manual boost controller and ARP head studs, set the boost at 20psi and watch the tires melt  ;D
Downpipes are available from Giles and another exhaust company (I forget which one right now).

how come you guys don't use the AAZ exhaust manifold that used a K14 turbo? Aren't the ports d shaped to match the AAZ cylinder head? And where did you get that Mk1 downpipe that's nice...the ones I've got came from Techtonics.

has anyone put a T3 on an AAZ and tried to use the 1.6 oil pan and turbo oil return line? maybe it would reach down there?  :D

AAZ is over a half inch taller than a 1.6, i dont see how the return line is going to magically lengthen its self..

Yes, I did till I got my new AAZ pan powdercoated. I had to fudge up a return and seal the bolthole for the AAZ drain.
