The engine is a 1.9 AAZ turbo in an 82 VW Westfalia. I was driving back home from a 1200 mile vacation in the Sierras and running intermittently into the 4000 RPM range. When we pulled off to get some lunch, I noticed a ticking noise.
I have no idea what it is and can only hope it's nothing serious. The ticking goes away when I let it idle downhill with no pedal. As soon as I put pedal to it, it shows up.
It runs fine otherwise, starts right up seems to have the same power.
Bad injector?, Stuck lifter - or something else.
Any thoughts appreciated.

injector if it goes away when you let off the throttle..
if its a lifter, it will tick regardless of throttle position..

I agree. take your fuel lines off and run them in to a bottle of straight auto trans fluid.

If I discover which injector it is, can I simply buy a new one?
yes i too have a tickey injector, that can get to a downright loud tick.
i have yet to do the ATF trick (was kinda waitin on mtrans to respond on that) but i think it will have some affect.

Do them all at the same time unless the others were very recently replaced.
