yep still confused. all i know is i have an 84 with a 020 trans. id like a flywheel with the correct tdc marks and a better clutch and now im more confused then when i started

the 16v flywheel sitting in my bedroom, has the proper TDC mark. thats the only mark you need on the flywheel.

you need:

16v pressure plate
8v clutch disk
and any 210mm flywheel that has a TDC mark, and like i say, most of the flywheels ive seen, had a TDC mark. ive only seen one in my life that didnt have TDC. and i will NEVER forget it. once you get a digifant 6* flywheel, ahd fight it for months, you will never forget it.

diesels dont have special timing marks.. all you need is a TDC mark!
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

The last 210mm flywheel I used had the TDC mark in the right place.

which clutch disc would be small spline with the 210 mm.

yeah the i didn't understand was what cars came with 210mm flywheels and also the small spline input shaft.  i was under the impression that the 210mm flywheel was an aba and 16v thing so u couldn't get one with the smaller splines unless it was something aftermarket, but apparently any older gas 8v would have the right clutch so long as it's not an aba

yea..

the way to remember it, is as follows:

under 100hp, usually 90mm drive flanges, and a smaller (190/200mm) clutch..

over 100hp, usually 100mm drive flanges, and the 210mm clutch..

and another thing.. the flywheel has NOTHING TO DO with the clutch spline diameter..

the clutch is the only part that dictates what trans/input shaft you use..

being that your car is an 84, it will probably have a 200mm clutch, like my 84 had when i pulled it apart..

and another thing.. you CAN USE the mk3 2.0 flywheel and pressure plate, but not CLUTCH, as you mentioned in your last post.

or is it more simple, any 8v bigger than a 1.7 has a 210mm fly wheel, and diesels all had 200 unless they're older

i think most, if not all the 1.7's had 200mm wheels..

Jeremy is a 1.7 guru, so maybe he will know..

i think the "under 100hp rule" is easier to remember..

but there are exceptions to every rule. my 86 golf came stock with 85hp, a 210mm clutch, and 90mm drive flanges..

so as i was redoing my timing i figured i would ask this question. my flywheel has all kinds of degree marks with all different kinds of letters also. does it have a gas flywheel. any way to tell exactly what size it is without pulling the trans?

diesel flywheels have one timing mark usually, just the TDC mark AFAIK..

gasser or UNIVERSAL flywheels have lots of timing marks. the only important mark is the 0* (TDC) mark..

i kinda remember my TD rabbit having this kind of flywheel also.. it had a brand new 200mm clutch setup in it when i got it. didnt take me long to get that clutch slipping..

as was stated before, just be very careful that you dont get a DIGIFANT flywheel, because they also only have one timing mark, but its 6*, not 0*..

this has about 3 different zeros in it an a,b and a d also. this is engraved into the top. but the one zero thats engraved also has a zero cast into the flywheel at the spot also. very confusing

FWIW, TDC is almost always right at the edge of a bolt hole..

post up a pic, we will find your TDC mark..

if its not right next to a flywheel bolt, then its not TDC..
