hey all just wondering if its possible to remove the exhaust and intake manifolds while the head is still in the car. i have 3 broken exhaust manifold studs and a massive exhaust leak under the hood along with zero boost. just dont want to go through the hassle of changing the head gasket and all that jazz.
u can do it but its not fun
Do you live in the states? (Sorry on my phone) if you do spend the extra $30 for the gasket and bolts that it costs you guys down there from rockauto and pull the head... It will be total hell with broken studs...

yea, if you got broken studs, just pull the head, its 100,000x easier..
nahh i live up in dryden ontario, winters comin soon and i gotta get this fixed before it gets -50 lol. i just picked up a free mk2 but its n/a. might do a plate swap i mean insure it and fix it over the winter:P but yeah ive had the head off before to change the head gasket, i do have a set of bolts and a hg, i guess fwiw i might as well pull the head again. i just dont have the timing tools anymore so im hooped.

I would just plate swap if it works for you, make sure to swap tags too.. IF ya do get pulled over you want it to look half legit. I've done it, and im not anywhere near as "north" as you are. So up there with these old cars I doubt anyone could really give a damn.
I did this on my 85 because one day it lost boost and sounded like an old vw bug. Freaked me out. I ended up poking around and found hand loose studs, etc.
I pulled the manifolds and turbo apart and it actually wasn't bad if you have the tools and can get your head under the car so you can move your body around. Pretty straightforward order as well as the install.
I ended up having one stud broke off in the head up top and believe I got very lucky because I had just enough room to get an easy out piece in there which I only tried because I never had an issue with a rusted bolt on this car and so many other studs came out easy. Soaked with some freeze off stuff for a couple day in spurts and luckily it went well.
Ordered new gaskets, studs, and I believe there are some special thick washers and some copper nuts and it all went good and has been fine for a couple months now.
I also replaced the donut gasket at the downpipe for the hell of it with new clips. Didn't know it at the time but all of that also led to diesel smell inside the cab with the window down which is no good.
