bad starter on 1.9TD
« on: August 10, 2011, 07:53:27 am »
Hello, when i go to start my car in the morning or after sitting awhile after work, i find that when i start it, it acts as if the cold start wasnt out, but it is, sometimes its hard to pull out...any ways when i start it, it slowly builds up too about 1300 RPM (mind you there is a 1.6TD boost pin and fuel turned up 1/8th turn about) so the high RPM is from the incease in fuel.. but when i push in the cold start, it doesnt change RPM.. Now question is : Would having a slow/weak starter cause the car to start up weird.. It has a new battery 1000CCA. Ill post vid when i can, but much help would be nice, because i dont think it well start when winter hits...i had 3 out of 4 glow plugs replaced in the winter..

Thanks, Koady

i see a starter causing NONE of the problems you discribe..

your pump is out of tune.. do you remember EXACTLY what you did to it?

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

maybe.. I unscrewed the four hex bolts, took out 1.9 pin, put 1.6 pin and spring into pump, screwed back togather.. turned fuel up a little, now revs at 1200-1300 rpms...Im thinking that ill need to turn the RPMs down because the starter might be only able to turn the engine over to 800-900 RPMS so the rought idle up to 1200-1300 might be cause by the cold engine trying to speed up after just being started.. thats what i have been thinking.. Im gonna try to turn down either the idle or back the fuel off just to try it.

Standing in the front of the car, do i turn to the left or right to turn the idle down?

If you have the throttle arm in a weird spot, it can change idle rpm with engine temp..

this is not starter, battery, or anything else electrical.

If you took the top off, you also took the throttle off its shaft. One or two splines out can cause weird issues like you are describing.

The pin could be longer or shorter than the last one. The screw would require adjustment then. I bet it is giving you more fuel as it is further up the ramp than the old pin. I would unscrew your torx bolt 1/2 turn and see if it helps. If it doesn't put it back where it was and take your main fuel screw back down the 1/8 turn and then mess with the pin screw.

Idle and main screws should be slotted. On the very top of the pump, the LDA, it should have a 8mm nut which takes a 13mm wrench. Inside that nut should be a torx bolt that pushes on the boost pin. That is the one I am talking about.

you turned up the fueling, and DID NOT turn down the idle screw did you?

i bet thats your problem..

The boost pin nor the starter have any effect on the running problems you describe.

Turn the idle down by backing off the throttle stop screw or with the idle setting on the back of the pump - two screws pointing up locked by 10mm nuts, move the right hand one anti-clockwise.

You say the cold start is stiff, is it moving? Is there a rod coming up form the cold start mech? This can be adjusted by turning it, often it is set that the idle screw setting makes no difference as the lever is held open by the rod. (which is a form of fast idle when the engine is cold)

i turn the fuel back done.. now idles at 950ish on cluster, and put 1.9 pin back in.. The cold start comes out.. there is no rod where the cold start is, only a screw/bolt that holds the cold start.. My car has AC if that helps.. Also i was looking in the TDI section and someone said  there is a glow plug fuse above the fuse panel, I am gonna check that tomorrow before i start the car, hopfully that is the prob and not the crank nose as someone told me :-[..  all tho there is a fuse in the engine compartment and thats fine.. so maybe there is another one (above fuse panel) and that one is bad.... ill check tomorrow..

have you verified that the glow plugs are working?
