1.6 NA and 1.9 TD.. few questions.
« on: July 27, 2011, 06:24:14 pm »
So I have a 1.6 NA that's a good driver in excellent shape. I am wanting to turbo it.. I've read reviews that say NO and some that say it's fine.

I also just got a 1.9 TD that's running great today for a parts car. Body is in terrible shape.. I was wondering if I could put the 1.9 head and turbo on my 1.6 and maybe I'll switch the pump too? Please I'd like some insight from some of the pros on the forum.

Thanks,
steevz

if you've got the complete 1.6 and the complete 1.9 just swap the engines. You'll be in for the same amount of work to swap the heads and ***, so why not just do the whole shebang? :D:D

I was thinking that.. but if swapping the whole things I think the 1.9 should be rebuilt. It has high kms and I know the 1.9 are notorious for the crank issues later in life.

Which would make this a big job, right? Can the 1.6 block not take the turbo and 1.9 head, also the pump?

High kms don't necessarily mean a worn out motor. I have an AAZ with 390,000 on it, still with 450psi compression. It's easy to remove the lower timing sprocket and inspect the crank. Not all of them go bad. Mine was still in as new cond. when I inspected it.

What year is your NA? Is it hydraulic or solid?

It is a 1990.

Yes, the AAZ has 391k on it too.. will inspect this weekend. As for swapping engines.. are there any good write ups on this with everything I'm going to need to change over?

If it's 90 you can swap the head and other pieces over. The oil filter stand won't fit the 1.6 block but you can modify yours on the NA or it might already have the port needed for the turbo oil feed.

It's pretty much a direct swap unless you have power steering or AC

If it's a golf you'll really want to swap trannys.

I live in Vancouver. Not too cold.. I think I'm just going to do a full swap. I'd like to probably replace some gaskets and seals on the 1.9. Upon visual inspection you can see oil down around the oil dipstick. But not from the dipstick O ring. They're both Jettas. 90 and 96.

if the aaz is in good running order, i'd swap the trans and all, just throw in a new clutch and reseal the transmission while its out, and put a new pilot bushing in. also theres nothing wrong with turboing an na engine.  i always kind of wanted to build a highly built na engine just to be dumb.

Hmm.. okay, well I've decided to do the swap. Anyone know what I will or SHOULD replace during the swap?

So how heavy are the aaz's? Should I be able to remove it without an engine hoist? I don't have one and don't really want to buy one for just swapping one engine..

Heh, by yourself? Noo wayy, unless your secretly The Great Khali lmao.

With the trans and fluids, I'd say they weigh easy 500+lbs. EASY. My bro and I lifted a 1.6TD out of pickup bed to the ground last month, turbo, mani's, trans, and fluids.. Almost friggan died. 3 guys and a 4x4 of wood shouldn't be too bad
