oil cooler
« on: July 17, 2011, 11:48:56 pm »
hey all,
i have everything i need for the stock 1.6td oil cooler setup except for the metal coolant line

I was wondering if i should just get a front mounted "air cooled" radiator type oil cooler instead of going through with the stock one.  it seems to be more popular and idk if the metal line is expensive.

any advice is appreciated
thanks

That is what I have. The coolant pipes are still available from online places and maybe the dealer if you don't want to go this route. I think german auto has the coolant pipe. I went this way for one reason, I eliminated the stock oil cooler so I wouldn't get antifreeze in the oil if it failed.

my AHU coolent pipe was full of rust holes.. i disliked the $100+ on a new one so saved lots of coin by building it out of copper.. under $20 in elbows and pipe... will never rust so on.. so think about that as a viable option also..

Are you running both of those oil coolers at once?

mk1 doesnt take a special metal coolant line.. its the rad bypass hose, and the 4" long connector hose that goes from the metal coolant pipe, to the center barb of the water pump.

I am not using both coolers at once, Libbybapa is. He uses the stock as a warmer and the one linked as the cooler.

I used a a/c condensor in a bronco but never in a vw. That is a lot of cooling and in the winter around here I think it would be counter productive even with the thermo plate. It still lets 10% oil circulate so the engine isn't shocked by cold oil all the sudden. With something that big it might run cool all the time for our little engines.

Yeah I think I will have to look for something smaller than the a/c condensor but I definitely need something. Unfortunately I have the added challenge of ridiculously cold winters and insanely hot summers in this god-forsaken place.

That is the hard mount to the engine. It bolts to the rubber mount that is on the car. If you have a mount like this on the back of your engine then you don't need this one. If not you probably bought the rubber engine mount that goes in the car and you need both.

Alright, well I have a mk1 1.6Na that i'm converting so i'm assuming i do not already have on, so it bolts to a rubber mount in the back near the firewall?

That's a mk2 rear passenger side mount. So, no you don't need it. It's nice and clean though... ;D

thank you, and yea if someone wants it feel free to contact me.

But back to my original question, i hooked up my oil cooler and connected the the "T" hose that goes from the water pump to the oil cooler and the little nipple piece.

The other hose goes from the oil cooler to where? I was under the impression it went into a fitting on the metal coolant line but there is none
