Volkswagen Transmission Main Input Shaft Play
«
on:

I’ve been poking around over several site and no one seems to (even the book) talk about play on the main input shaft on a 020 transmission nearest to the clutch/engine.
I do know play is bad but how much play is tolerated?
Watch the play on this shaft at
YouTube

I didn't see any play in that shaft, what movie were you trying to show?

'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.
I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Yikes, if that's the one he meant then that is definitely too much play!!!
There's probably no bearing left to speak of.

Umm not exactly. On the beetle tranny that is shown, there is a pilot bearing. This stabilises the input shaft to compensate for play. Not uncommon at all to see that much play in a perfectly fine tranny.
