Mk2 Canadian Diesel Tachometer problem

So I just got a Canadian diesel cluster. Got her all hooked up and everything functions perfectly, except for the reason I got the thing in the first place. The tachometer. I replaced the sensor on the back of the odometer. Still nothing. Is the cruise relay related to this? I took it out since I have a blown cruise diaphragm anyway. Should I hook it back up? Anything else to check? I hooked the brown and white with blue striped wires up both ways. So not sure that's the issue. Do I have to run a new wire to the W terminal?

is there signal at the cluster end of the W terminal wire?

i would use a DMM to check for voltage.. a light bulb might fry something.

I don't have it apart at the moment but, I'll check that and get back.  Any other should checks?  The bottom of that sensor is marked + and the top was unmarked so I hooked it up that way.  I didn't have my DMM at the time but I'll use it tonight.

what sensor are you talking about? the only sensor i know of on a mk2 cluster, is on GTI clusters, and its a speed sensor..

Same sensor.  Both my US cluster and Canadian cluster have it.  2 wires.  One brown (-) and one white with blue stripe(+) plug into it.  2 tiny screws hold it on. On the back of speedo.

why are you messing with the speed sensor? that has NOTHING to do with the tachometer at all..

you have tach problems dont you? the vehicle speed sensor doesnt trigger your tach.. the signal from the W terminal on the alternator drives it..

its COMPLETELY POSSIBLE that you got ripped off on that cluster..

Wasn't sure if the speed sensor had anything to do with it.  Oops.  Regardless, replaced it anyway.  Can't hurt anything right?  Hope I didn't get the wienie from one someone.  I guess that leaves only tiny wires on the cluster plug to check.  I see the plug layout on A2resource.  Should I just use the one labeled TACH and ground the black DMM lead?

idk, im no expert on tachs. i know how to hook them up and make them work, anything besides that, im of little help..

the bently manual might show you how to test the tach..

Yeah.  I'll check Bentley tonight.  Just seems like with everything else working and the traces on back in good shape, it should just plug and go. ???

I tested the W terminal this morning and it was showing 7.15V on the DMM.  Does this sound okay?  I haven't yet tested for continuity at the cluster.  Is it possible that the blue circuit foils are the same for different clusters.  I have 2 diesel clusters with clocks, a 8V gasser cluster with tach and the one currently giving me trouble.  Maybe I could swap out blue foils?

is there also 7.15v at the cluster end of the w term wire?

if there is, then the tach its self is probably dead. the actual tach movement, the part that swings the needs.

the blue circuit boards are different between D and TD and GAS clusters, and everything is connected to them. swapping the circuits would be ALOT of work..

Take the tach cluster in question - and joggle woggle it around some.
Nothing fierce - just some back and forth twisties.

Watch the tach needle as you do it -- it should have some bounce and life to it - with fluid bouncing movement to the rhythym you are joggle woggling.

If the needle seems stiff in movement or jerky - or dead -
