1.8 gas manifold
« on: June 19, 2011, 12:03:14 pm »
Recently received a 1.8 gas  exhaust manifold for my 1.6 NA. Will post part number later on for you guys to verify.

With a Giles IP, should I/could I port and polish this for a freer flowing exhaust?

I did get this from a machinist in my VW club, he mentioned to get him a gasket before he does the work.

If I am wrong on his info above, as usual your help is needed. I was going to buy it from TT with the d/p, but hopefully he saved me a few $$.

Advice and help is as usual, appreciated.

Stay safe, stay well. Jimmy.

Well any 8v exhaust manifold will fit for sure.. So your good there.

I am not entirely sure it is any better than the stock manifold? Are you using this as an upgrade? Or because you just needed a manifold?

I think when porting and gasket matching, the head will need work too... Or there will be steps in the exhaust flow for turbulence to happen..

I was told that a 1.8 manifold would give a better performance with a Giles modified IP. I was going to order one with a flex D/P from Techtronics and go with a 2.25" exhaust.

I was just curious if porting the manifold would be any better. As you can see with my limited mechanical knowledge, I did not think about the head. :)

So if so, I will have to do both instead of just one.

Many thanks for the reply.

theres like 4 different kinds of manifolds tho..

single bolt on downpipe
dual bolt on downpipe (big flange)     <---this is the only one you get any gains from
dual bolt on downpipe (small flange)
toilet bowl type

so, witch is it?
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

and i believe the diesel toilet bowl was actually larger, the one on my car doesn't look very restrictive anyway, a bigger down pipe would definitely give some awesome flow, as much as any 1.6d non turbo would ever need

I was unaware that there were 2 styles of the dual styles. When did they make the switch?

Porting the manifold would be costly and very labour intensive with minimal gain.

Is this the small one? As in the mk1 version?

Thanks, guys. FWIW, it has 6 bolts on the D/P side, which I am sure most do. :)

From what I could gather, part number is 055 253 033.

I was just questioning myself and wondering since the 1.8 from TT doesn't need it, would it be worth it to do it to this one, even if the guy who gave it to me was giving me a good price to do it?

Thanks for the heads up, Tyler.

Thanks to everyone else as well. I stay amazed and in awe at what you guys do with these VW diesels. :)

ROR, do you have the part number for the big flange you mention?

Stay safe, stay well. Jimmy.

manifold is off an 88 Jetta.. PF code engine.. downpipe is off a 92 jetta 16v..
