Transmission off - Checking Clutch (how?)

I've got the transmission off, and my thought is that I need to check the clutch while I have it off. Is there an easy way to do so without dismantling everything?

you have to visibly inspect the clutch, and idk how you would do that without pulling the flywheel, and then re-aligning the clutch, given that its still good..

Just disassemble it, suck it and visually check it all out the last thing you want to do is pull the tranny again because your flywheel needed resurfaced or something crazy, its always the one thing that you dont check that goes to crap...

Sometimes it is the things I do check and think, well not the greatest but it will do for now.  Then tomorrow comes and it breaks.

Its what 9 bolts? 12 point 9mm (depending on year I have seen 6 point too). You don't even need a clutch alignment tool, just slap it in there and make sure you have the same clearance around the spline hole and your golden. The vw tool, or the aftermarket one let's the disc flop around like 1/8" anyway... Its not entirely accurate.

When was the clutch last done?? Does it engage well still?? At the very least you could do the pp and disc... Or the bare minimum do the disc alone. I've done it in a pinch.

wrap the outside edge, and center shaft with black tape till its the right diameter. my clutch tool fits a disk firmly in the direct center of the flywheel. bit of a friction fit..

voila, the clutch is perfect every time..

ty for the advice. The crappy thing is, I commute an hour each way to go to work every day. So the only "real" time I get to work on it, is on the weekends, so it's turned into a month long project haha.

...but at least, it's allowed me to do one bit at a time and not rush, I discovered the linkage boot was shot, so now I have to look for one of those (cheapest, I've found so far, is $40), and then in reading, I discovered that we're supposed to also change out the selector plate when we go from 4sp to 5sp (the black plate under the shifter gets swapped out with the white one from the 4sp car, for best results.)....and while I'm at it, probably the linkage shaft bushing, so I don't have to tear into that all over again.....

The plus side is, I broke up with my girlfriend, so I have all this MONEY to spend on my car hahaha, that's a sad sad realization, that I'm happier about having money for my car, than having a girlfriend haha.

girlfriends just get in the way.. and they make the VW jealous.. lol.

That's why you get a gf that will help you fix your car, especially your Mk1. We got our Jetta under the condition that I got to help work on it. We were engaged a few months later...not sure if that had anything to do with or not though 

Although, some VWs will forever be jealous. My hubby used to have a B4 Passat. It hated me, but I hated it. It was "the other woman".

I've gotten my entire family in to vw's. I have an 84, and 81. Bro has an 84. Gf has a 90, and her sister has a 95.

I insisted they all get vw's so I could do the work cheap and easy.

Here's a bit of news as well. I found a guy in Mexico that carries new lenses. Replaced my front turn signals, side markers, and he's got new and "updated" rear signals.
