Built 1.6TD into Audi 90 quattro
« on: April 23, 2011, 10:46:48 am »
Hi there!  My name is Jason and I am building a mean 1.6TD that I may put into my 90 quattro.  I would like some opinions on whether it will be a fun/fast car with the 1.6TD compared to the 20v 5 cylinder the car had in it previously.  I am building the engine up pretty good, the head is ported very well with the valves deshrouded, it will have a cam, mkII intake, huge intercooler, VNT turbo and a cranked up IP.  The diesel is quite a bit lighter than the I5 as well.  The old engine made 165hp and I hope to have about that from the diesel when its done.

So, my question is....  Will the diesel be more fun due to the torque it makes?  Just want some opinions and pointers on the build.  Thanks guys!!

one thing to worry about.. the 5 cylinder bell housing is WAY DIFFERENT than a 4 banger unit. and the only way to get a 4 cyl to fit that trans, is if it is one of the "uni-sex" trannies.. meaning it has both bell patterns.. otherwise, you gotta swap your transmission for a 4 cylinder unit..

and the 20v 5 cylinders were pretty awesome engines.. idk if your gonna get the power of the 20v from the diesel.. you will get more torque for sure, but 165hp from an IDI 1.6 takes a bit of work..
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

It has the unisex trans.  I know that 165-170hp takes some work, but I think I can do it with the little diesel.  From what I have read here 175hp is attainable reliably, its just when going higher things get hairy.  The headwork I have done so far is in line with Malone's 1.6 and he was close with a DIY pump and wastegated turbo, I am confident that a GT1749v will gove me the power that I'll be happy with, how is your engine for fun factor ROR?

my engine is fun to drive, but i have a gay close ratio trans, and a SUPER LIGHT car.. (1700# mk1 rabbit..) my car tops out at like 115 mph, but it gets there in a hurry..
