diesels are a lazy engine by nature.. they dont need a light flywheel. its kinda counter-productive if you ask me.
I dispute these claims. Its only the governed de-tuned state in which Vw designed them, that is lazy. Sure most stock diesels are a little anemic and cant get out of their own way, but thats not entirely true.. The bigger I6 Cummins, V8 ford and chevy's can pull their rpm ranges pretty quickly (for a V8), because they have the torque to do so. Go outside and floor your car in neutral, you hit roller skipping rpm in a second. The same is not true with a load on the engine because there simply isn't the power to do so. Sure a gas engine can pull that range quicker BUT wot is wot, the fuel isn't governed. Take the governor out of the equation and these little diesels will pull the rpms right along side a similar hp/tq engine, say that of a 1.6 carb or 1.7 mfi. /threadjack
But yes generally a lighter flywheel is of choice so that you have less rotating mass when way up high, something you'll never see on your diesel.
I had thought about the higher revving gassers and how it helps them. My logic was that since I only have roughly 5500 rpms to play with, I should make that as easy as possible for the engine. I'm still gonna throw it in, Ill let you know how it goes.
IMO, go for the lighter flywheel. It really made a big difference in my son's 1.6td.
He had 1.9 IP and injectors, D24 turbo at 2.5-ish bar, 3' dp to start with and then he shaved something like 3kg of the flywheel.
Here's a few years old clip of the car when he was playing a bit with a V70R. (sorry for the bad quality)

Funny you should mention this. I've been toying with the idea of putting the flywheel from my gasser donor onto my diesel when I swap out the transmission.
I think that USRT has them too. They are a kit that you put together and can adjust all angles.
Heres a link to a kit at BFI.

I have this kit, looks awsome, its just waiting to go back in with my engine soon hopefully, Got it on ebay for $140
Finally got to use it and it works great! definatley would recommend this to anyone who wants to upgrade there stock, sloppy linkage
Well, finally got the 4sp tranny out, and getting the 5sp prepped to go back in.
Ordered this:

Sad thing is, when I disconnected the driver's side drive shaft, the half-shaft that connects to the differential came apart and the bearings when everywhere. It was new, I just think the guy didn't put it together correctly.
If the axle was subject to an extreme angle it comes apart fairly easily.. The Bentley will illustrate how to rebuild it, even a lesser Haynes or Chilton will as well.
ROGER IS THE MAN!!!
I ordered my Missing LinkZ shift kit (a1e I think it is complete w/Short throw adapter), $100 out the door, AND he shipped it, SAME DAY...I might have it by Saturday. That'll make me happier than a swine in excrement.

Shift kit arrived today, I'm glad I bought this one instead of the $150 one, same function....less work to install. I don't have to grind off and drill the little knobs that the other shift kits make you do.

I have the same kit sitting in my parts bin. Just waiting for the timing needed to install. I wanted to order the more expensive kit because it has the main shifter shaft bushings. Mine are worn out.
I can always order them, but for not i'll just go with stock oem replacements.
AND there was no duty for shipment to canadia. THATS the best deal I've seen.
