My lights are pulsing on the 91 na swap i just did. I swapped in the 81 bracket and Alt i had around as i had given the alt to my bros 91 td swap.
So for my 84, with a 91 engine.. what alts fit a 81 bracket
If I can look for an upgraded one and wedge it in there and throw a v pulley on it i'd be very happy.

To pull this back up..
Still have the 91 motor, with an 81 bracket, and an 84 alternator.. but I am looking for more than 65a. The new headlamps i just installed take 33.5a by themselves when on high-beam.. coupled with the rear defroster, heater fan, stereo and fogs (9a) I am adding before winter .. I do not think my old alternator will be up for the task. Also I am pretty sure it was the original alt on my 84 when i got it.. so this alt has 216k on it.
I have the AHU tdi just sitting there, with its alternator not doing anything.. 120amp.. that'd sure be nice eh?? maybe even steal its coolant neck with the three glow plugs built in to it for aiding in coolant warm-up

i would get some mk2 diesel alt brackets, and a 90a alternator..
i have a 90a alt in my mk2 GTI, with 2 batteries, and a BIG STEREO.. personally, i would like a bigger alt, but the 90a gets me by.

Not really worth the trouble.. I've tried that, and a few other home brew rigs using glow plugs and the difference is practically unnoticeable.. Surface area seems to be the problem.. I'm thinking some variety of heated grid in the bypass hose would be they key.. The search continues...
If I ever get around to putting an engine in my car I think I'm going to opt for one of the Ford 3G alts as found on the 3.0 ohv Taurus.. 130amps and very plentiful... They already have the wire off the stator for the tach too...

i need details.. how big of a package? serpentine already? you say they basically already have a W terminal?

Look up an alt for a '95 Taurus 3.0.. That seems to be the most common one, and appears to be the best option for fitment....
They were used on some ford products from '87 up, and all from about '94 up.. There's a bazillion different combinations of mounting points on these things pending on the application.. In later years they got away from having the equivalent of a W terminal... But pre about '97 ish the regulator used the stator signal, and there was a separate connection on the alt case that conntected to the regulator which is also mounted to the back of the alt like a VW.. .. All of them have serp pulleys on them, although a v-belt pulley will swap right on if needed.. Majority were 130 amp.. And a very few 90 amp.. There's also some 200 amp versions floating about in more recent years, and they can be built to a nutty 300amp.. They are slightly larger than the VW 65a alt, not sure about later 120a units..
I used to put them on my older Fords as an upgrade to the old 1g and 2g (fire starter) units.. I need to grab one and see how it's going to work for fitment on the VW...

That's what I'm going to do, at least for fitment.. I may just grab a few and use them, heck there's hundres of the things ripe for the picking... I have the slider for tensioning the belt from an old 2.8L Bronco II that looks like it may work dandy

Interesting....someone needs to grab one and pull some measurements. I'm running a A2 90amp gasser alt on my A1, on a non a/c bracket. It also adjusts from the top with spherical end links.
I'm curious that the width of the mounting sleeve is. Anyone know what wires are in the 3 pin plug on the regulator? Is this thing self exciting?

the plug that goes in the back of the alternator? with 2 bigger wires, and one smaller wire?
the 2 big red wires are the charge wires that turn into one single wire about a foot from the plug, then run to the battery..
the other wire, blue maybe? is the exciter wire..

Come on, I'm not that clueless. I'm referring to the pins on that Ford regulator. VW regulators don't have any wires.
