I was thinking about insatlling an intercooler in my 1.6 gtd with k24 turbocharger. What is the best and cheapest solution to make?

Factory GTDs came with an intercooler under the bonnet. Or are you converting a TD to a GTD? If so, maybe the easiest and cheapest IC is one from a wrecked TDI.

Well, mine was a NA originaly, then i got a td engine, but it had no intercooler. Is the tdi intercooler compatible with the td engine?

any intercooler would be compatible as long as you can make it fit :)

exactly

this is what I've got in my mk1 GTD:

see thia thread for more pics:http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=13412&highlight=#13412

its from a land rover TD5 - I basically just had a look on ebay and bought the biggest one with basically the right dimensions to fit, it did take a bit of fettling but it only cost me about £40 so I'm pretty happy :)

yea the surface area on that intercooler is huge.. will definitely help cool much better than a smaller one

hey sorry entuzijast
I have been meaning to get the dimensions for you but it meant actually being in the right place at the right time with a tape measure!

the core size is:

26" wide - 9 1/2" high - 1 1/2" deep

with the end caps adding a couple of inches either side, about half an inch to the height and a couple of inches to the depth.

another pic to help:

HTH :)

I started installing this huge Volvo 5cyl petrol turbo intercooler I got for the grand sum of £10 [:)] in my GTD, though I removed it because to pipe it up I'd have to move the battery

Click the pics for larger 1024x768 versions

I had to grind the front of the lower radiator support to get it to fit and I'm going to have to fit the battery in the boot so I can route the intercooler outlet tubing.  unless I can move it over, dont know if I tried that or not as I fitted it ages ago and removed it the next day.
