I doubt that the cummins parts department offers the plunger and head as replacement components. I suspect that they will only sell a complete pump.

To even talk to the parts department you need the CPL (control parts list) number from an engine that was equipped with the 12mm ve pump, the parts departmnet can look up anything once they have this. I can get a CPL number from that spec. engine the next time I see my father, his chevy van is 4bta powered.

If you're getting used stuff, just about any pump from a 4bt/bta that was used in an automotive application will have a 12mm plunger. Most of these were found in Grumman delivery vans.

I have not yet found a cummins pump head that will swap without any cam plate changes. If anyone does know of one, they're probably keeping it to themselves. You'd likely be better off finding a good deal on a complete pump and then swapping the peices onto your pump as the 4bt pump has a larger input shaft.

jwspin: I would PM, Deo aka: "therabbittree" as he is the only person I can think off hand that has a working pump in this configuration, he may be able to give you some better direction on it. I know that he had it built by piers diesel research a number of years ago.

I'm pretty sure Deo just sent piers a VW pump and a Cummins pump and had them put the two together.

And piers took the pump to N.W. fuel injection, they are the ones who actually built it, even though me and the manager are buddies he won't tell me what they did exactly, its a secret.

the guy claimed he can get anything. it may be used but i dont care about that. he was very proud to say that he "can get anything i need". hopefully he is right. it is decieving when reading this forum. whenever people ask questions about pump mods members of the forum are quick to say put a larger plunger from a ranger, peugout, or 4bt. this made me think that it is a very common thing. now you guys are telling me that you know of maybe one or two people who "have" done it. haha o well im still down to try.
could i just swap the whole pump on? what would the advantages or disadvantages be with this setup?

thanx again

Pump mods
« Reply #7 on: January 12, 2006, 05:14:09 am »
hi guys

i haven't as of yet to try and get a 12,11 or a 10mm head swap yet

with all my mods on my pumps guys are getting about 145HP at the
wheels which means about 170 net HP from a 1.9L turbo diesel is
pretty dam good. without much smoke.

your right about the cam plate swap with the cummins head u need to
find a camplate from 1997 1.9L idi only. but there are allot of other
things u need to worry about when doing this kind of parts swap.

such as

1:  Plunger lift setting
2:  Spring pretension on the head return
3:  Pre-Stroke setting
4:  Which springs to use for a given head & rotor

these are just a few things to worry about.
if some of these settings are wrong u could potentially seize your new
head and destroy your pump totally.

i don't recomend people doing this kind of majoy swap without allot research.

i won't give instructions on how to do this kind of mod.
to me without the proper training it's way too dagerous for home guys
to do it.

i've been working on VE pumps for 20 years and used to rebuild all of
Bosch's pumps for all of canada back in the 80's.

modding has always been a hobby of mine and hot rodding even more.

i was very happy to find someone like Dr D. to work with me and develop
a reliable high performance pump for VW and other VW derived engines.

hope this fills in some questions everyone is asking about mods.

btw swapping a cummins pump onto a VW is not impossible but the drive
shaft is 20mm taper insead of 17mm

but u'd only have a pump that wants to rev to 2500 rpm max, i don't
think anyone would want that!!!!!
