i replaced the resonator on my TD with a very big very cheap glasspack and it worked wonders. Very quiet.

Does not. It sounds wickedly awesome. I have a straight pipe with a glass-pack on a 2" exhaust. I also have a fully shimmed governor, and the good exhaust note doesn't even start until 4000 rpm's.. Under 4000 it sounds like i have a full exhaust with muffler and resonator.

Pends on the glass pack.. I had some an uber cheap one on the old Rabbit.. It sounded kinda raspy, but I think there was something rattling around in it, and the rest of the exhaust was still stock.... Current car has about the same setup as Jeremy's, 2" with an opened up toilet bowl, and it does sound damn good.. Only complaint is the drone on the highway.. I'm debating about installing 2 glass packs next time around.. One under the floor where the resonator would go, and one in the standard location.. That should be just enough to be tolerable for me...

Cherry bomb, cheapest glass pack you can buy I'm sure. ie. $30. lol
I have mine in between the down pipe and the shifter on my car, even with leaks the sound still comes out the tail pipe behind my rear driver tire. Don't have much in car noise, im sure if it were a completely sealed exhaust it would sound pretty quiet in car.

ok, well idk what was up with my car, but it was LOUD!!
the 4-1 header did not help out noise levels..
the only time my n/a sounded stock, was at idle.. and you could still tell it had pipes..
my car was rappin by 1750rpms.. not even joking.
i had a header, and a straight pipe back to a no-name red glass pack, with a foot or so of tail pipe.. it was FUGGIN LOUD!!
there was no "nice sounding" about my exhaust system.. my passengers and i would always giggle about the pipes tho, so it was honestly worth it..
would i do it again? HELL NO!

We must have had the same red no name glass pack.. I'm sure having a header made things worse too.. The glass pack I have now (dunno what brand it is to be honest) is about twice the diameter of the red things, and most definitely made of a heavier gauge steel...

Yeah, as mentioned, my glasspack equipped car is very quiet, but it's also running through a muffler. I'm not getting any raspiness or droning at all.
About the soot issue.... I can see that happening with a perforated cored resonator (or muffler) but the louvered styles should fare better. The louvers should direct the soot away from the packing. Even if not, my resonator was cheap enough that a replacement every few years wouldn't be an issue.

well, being that a RESONATOR is HOLLOW, they should not clog with soot..
glass packs go THUD when you tap them with a metal object.
resonators, or blown out glass packs, go TINK when you tap them with a metal object..
and yes Brett, im sure we had the same glass packs. did yours almost make your ears ring too? mine was louder than any fart-can-equipped honda ive ever heard..
and it wasnt that raspy loud like a honda, it had a CRACK to it..

You are correct. I mistakenly wrote resonator, when I meant glasspack; I do know the difference. For some reason, I referred to mine as a glasspack, and a resonator in the same post.

That would be the sound.. It was for 2" pipe, and diameter at the fattest part was only maybe 3" - 4" I guess that's what you get for a $10 glass pack.. The one I have now is also for 2" pipe, but is 5" - 6" at the fattest part.. Impressive how much difference there is...

Hi Guys,
On my 82 Caddy 1.6NA
I ran stock gasser Bosal exhaust (needed the extra $$ for other parts) and the truck had a new Bosal muffler and tail pipe on it,when I bought it.
No resonator in the system.
The Bosal muffler is center inlet and center outlet style oval shaped muffler.
So,I marked tail pipe orientation-then cut the tail pipe off- stuck a hole saw with extension in the muffler outlet and drilled thru the center baffle.
Now you can see right thru the muffler-inlet to outlet !
Then mig welded tailpipe back on.
The whole procedure took about 1-1/2 hours.
Made a nice difference in the power with a nice sounding exhaust !
No droning and quiet with windows up.
I'm a happy camper !
Total cost for exaust was under $75 (because I had the new muffler and tailpipe)

if you drilled a hole in your muffler, its not still quiet.. or else you havent had it above 3k rpms with the new exhaust..

I don't know, mine is pretty much a hole through the middle, and its quieter above 3000 than below.
