K03 turbo information
« on: January 10, 2011, 05:19:12 pm »
Looking for some information on the K03 turbocharger. My understanding is it was used on the 1.9L AAZ turbo diesel. I have been advised that the K03 would be a good turbo to use on my 1.6L NA that I plan on turbo'ing.

Now, exhaust manifold won't be a problem. Its my understanding that the TDI exhaust manifold will mate to the K03 just fine.  My issue is what to do about a downpipe.  I could use a stock downpipe, or an after-market one.  What do you guys recommend? I've noticed a few different exhaust connections (Probably diesel vs gas) and searched this forum. Found a lot of posts about people looking for downpipes, but not finding much. A quick eBay search didn't turn up much either.

Sorry for my newbish questions, but when it comes to the world of turbos, im in kindergarten. I am pretty set on the K03. A trusted source told me that the K03 would be best on an NA with a Giles pump. Just need some verification on the TDI exhaust manifold and downpipe options. Thanks guys, I _really_ appreciate it.

There's lots of k03's out there. It was a turbo used on the VAG 1.8t engines. You have to be specific when dealing with turbos. The gas k03 will not be the same as the diesel k03. I don't know any particulars about it but I'm sure some people on here have used it.

You will need a Ko3 exhaust manifold since it's different also

the intake boot is different also for the KO3 ( turbo to manifold  )

Iam have a ko4 hot side with a KO3 cold side built by gpopshop, There is a ebay seller selling new KO3 for what a ohc would cost

Techtonic's tuning can do your DP in 2.5 if you want

What platform is your install ?

Forgive my ignorance.  The K03 uses the same bolt pattern as the TDI exhaust manifold right? So I could use that?

What did you mean by platform is my install? It's going on a 1.6L NA with a Giles pump.

Is techtonic's tuning a vendor here or something?

I'm just strapping a turbo onto my 1.6. Its an MK2 Jetta, 1991.

Unless I get lucky and find a turbo motor guts and all, then I'll take the time to rebuild from the bottom up.

Techtonicstuning.com is mfg of exhaust systems and make downpipes

Mk1 1.6 td
mk1 1.9 td ( taller ) either turbo model

You will need a exhaust manifold to match the KO3, they were mfg with and without egr

I would do a  intake, exhaust all to match the

If you need a mk1 td snorkel for what ever turbo let me know

The snorkel's are different as the turbo's have different inlet size

I had to mfg the snorkel for just my application ( mk1 td airbox ) with ko3 small inlet

mkii snorkel ( stock) wont fit the ko3 inlet, smaller than the k14 or T3 turbo

I can make the mkii snorkel's in either size inlet, same side for the mkii airbox thou

Yeah. Hows that work, ordering from eBay germany?  Does paypal do the funds conversion and whatnot? Use google translate to communicate with the buyer?

I didn't see any MKII downpipes on the tuning site you showed.

As far as the snorken, and all that, it'd all have to be custom. I don't intend on using a stock td airbox. Probably a K&N filter or something attached to some pipe directly into the turbo.

Germans generally speak english more fluently than americans.

Techtonics tuning often referred to simply as tt can make you a down pipe for mkII install with whatever flange for your turbo, they probably don't list the application because there isn't much interest.

Ok. Well for all intents and purposes, lets assume I'm using the K03 from a 1.9L AAZ. The TDI manifold with the 3 bolt triangle flange should bolt to this turbo, right?

All that leaves for figuring out is an exhaust connection.  I'm going to go look some more but I'm having a hard time finding a K03 listed specifically for the AAZ that shows the exhaust connection so I know what to look for in a downpipe.

Euro manifolds are a little harder to get this side of the pond.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.
