IIRC the 020 before 93 were the small 24 spline except some 16V. Passats maybe too??? All of the diesel boxes were definately small splined.
I do agree with you that the gears are way crazy spaced.. but I have driven said rabbit when it had the 4A 4spd, behind the 1.6 N/a. I think a %25 power increase over that will be completely livable.. if I don't like it? how hard is it to swap out a tranny? the 5spd on it has a nasty sounding reverse.. or i'd use it no questions asked.
The TDI in front of a 4A may be better but... I had a GP or something like that in the green Rabbit.. Around town and flat terrain on the highway it was fine. I kinda got used to the thing and knew where to shift for it to run half decently.. However the 2 times I remember the thing sucking the most was on hills, and trying to pass on 2 lane roads.. It was either screaming with no speed, or bogged down and lugging with no speed...
