yeah box fits mk2 need to remake the two gearbox mounts and shorten the driveshafts you will also struggle with the speedo i think. theres a few guys done build threads on edition38 putting a pd and 6speed in a mk2

everything mounts up completely different. it looks to me that it bolts in like a VR engine.. motor mounts bolted to the top of the frame horns..
and that trans has a jack shaft and equal length axles..
it would be ALOT of work, but most likely WORTH IT in the end.

I'm pretty sure you're right. They always look chubby and short.. IIRC o2j's still have the separate 5th/6th gear housing on the side where as the o2m has all the gears inside the case
@ the OP, you need to set up the hydraulic clutch, including newer pedal box, custom mounts and somehow mounting the shifter box inside the car. The mounting brackets are completely different for the o2m, so you need to fab up a way of mounting the shifter box in the right position too. I was looking into it before and if I remember right, that's all there is to it. Not easy, but far from impossible

That looks the the unit from a Transporter. You might find that if you tried to put it in a golf, the gearbox would be at a weirdo angle. In the transporter, the engine tilts forwards, but teh gearbox still sits the same as the golf - different bellhousing bolt pattern.

not like i am familiar with eurovan/transporter drivetrain, but i am familiar with the R/G/J drivetrain.. and now that you mention it, that engine IS tilted FORWARD!

Do all the 02M have a jackshaft? That's kind of neat. I didn't know vw trans' could have those.

Euro Van had a jack shaft. There is a special mount to the back of the block that holds it. I know the trans is different sence it does not have a CV axle from it. They are the same 6spd but different bellhousing.
