lift / vane pump rebuild?
« on: October 06, 2010, 06:39:37 am »
I've a pump that's causing me all sorts of trouble, delivered to me from ebay seller for a gov mod before forwarding to the original buyer.
It arrived brim ful of diesel - always a good sign and I did the work

Phonecall from the Ash the owner saying it won't pump at all - we went through the obvious to no avail and he returned the pump.

Thankfully all my work was fine but once emptied of diesel, the spill collar was a covered in corrosion. No signs anywhere else though.

Having a spare known good pump head to hand, I swapped the lot over and shipped it back.

Another phone call, still not pumping. slight dribble from pump head centre port or injector lines when cracked open.

It appears that the lift pump isn't lifting, nothing coming out of the return but you can suck it through.

Whats involved with fixing / stripping the vane pump or should I just cut my losses on the contaminated pump and swap the LDA top onto the good eco pump I have?

I thought that would be the work involved.  ::)

I'd be leary about sending a completely disassembled/reassembled pump back to someone without first running it to be sure it worked.

Indeed, what I really need is a test bench but I think it impossible to build one without a 40hp motor to drive it.  ;)

It's worth a try.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

How about being soaked in diesel for days then drag started for about a mile without a single drop getting pumped?

If you've ever pulled apart a vane pump with stuck vanes, you'll soon realize that there really isn't a penetrating oil on the market that will free up really stuck ones. You're left pulling it apart.

If you go that route, I'd recommend that you take a long (and preferably brand new) phillips head screwdriver to access the screws that hold the vane pump in place. Hold it upright, set the screwdriver in place and whack it a few times with a hammer. If the vanes are stuck you can bet money those screw won't want to come out. Giving a few whacks helps loosen them up.

Having said all that, I just had some fabulous luck with an acetone/ATF 50/50mix on a stuck MK1 gasser fuel pump. I'm not certain yet if the vane is free inside the pump, but it was not spinning at all. After letting it soak for a week, and then whacking it against a block of wood, it spins like a dream now. All I need to do now is check that the pressure is good.
