BMW V8 Remote cartridge style oil filter?

I've wanted a cartridge style oil filter for my AAZ/1Z block since, well, the 1st time I saw one on a ALH. With a 50 degree install in the vanagon spinning the oil filter off always makes a mess even punching a hole in the bottom 1st to drain it. I know I could do a remote with the stock filter but for some reason like this idea more. I looked at the ALH housing with the integrated cooler a bunch I just can't see a easy way to do it, just too much mucking around with an adapter plate & lines to make it remote etc... A friend recommended the BMW V8 remote unit & they look perfect. I like the idea of being able to have a look at the filter at oil change time & just how civilised it is (princess here doesn't like to get too dirty).



I found this info in a tech article when looking for inof on the check valve as I thought that could be an issue:

"The oil filter housing is mounted vertically and has a plastic cover which is torqued to
23-27 Nm (17-20 ft. lbs.). The oil in the housing is drained into the oil pan through a
valve in the bottom of the housing which opens when the oil filter is removed.
An oil filter bypass valve is mounted in the filter element which opens at a pressure of
2.5 + 0.5 bar. To prevent the oil passageways from bleeding down after the engine has
been switched off, a check valve is installed in the oil feed side of the filter housing."

Any thoughts on why this might be a particular bad idea?

I am not sure what that means, but since it is in a vehicle already I think you would be fine. Sounds like it is just enough to hold the oil in there so that everytime you start it there isn't 6 quarts in the sump and none in the filter.
