Cracked Block 1.6L rabbit pickup
« on: August 25, 2010, 02:02:49 am »
I have a 1981  VW  Rabbit pickup, 1.6L NA diesel w/66,000Miles on it. And I just discovered I have a cracked block. It overheated and I thought I would need a new head but the head appears fine but the block has cracks in it.  I think I may be able to find a block but it is a 1.6 turbo, would that work? also my head has 11MM head bolts and I imagine the turbo will have 12MM bolts, would that work?

if you got an 11mm head, you either gotta use an 11mm block, or drill your head for bigger bolts..

you dont use 11mm head & bolts on a 12mm block..
VW it aint just a car, its a way of life..... Boost, Soot, Repeat

Also if you are swapping the guts of the block around, the oil pump is different, pistons need cutouts for the oil jets.

see if J-B Weld works, if the crack is on the outer surface.

Do the cracks run throw into a coolant passage or oil passage?  You should find out what they are.  If they don't go throw to something important, just have them welded up.  Who know how long they have been there?
