that area the heat shield lays on with the opening in the center, is it normal or an old engine after a while having chips and pieces missing? like it's not a perfect cicle anymore, kinda of jagged?
since i'm keeping the diesel and just ordered my new exhaust, i'm putting in brand new injectors cause the ones i have were still the ones from the previous owner and are a little noisey, and we've noticed a few seemed like there were little chips missing from people trying to pry the head shield out.
the heatshield still seats properly and everything, just wondering if anyone else seen this in their car, and if there are adverse affects.

its either corrosion, or erosion.. one of the 2. and its generally not a good thing, but if it gets bad enough, nothing will ever seal again.
only one of the four is very noticable. i'll have to take a photo so i can get opinons.
what's the best way to get them out, so that it doesnt get worse?
usually they're in there so good that a pick up tool wont do it.
been using very shallow picks.
i use a drift punch and insert it in the center hole. rock the punch around, and then pick out the loose shield..

I've used those small spring loaded needle nose pliers and just stick 'em in the heat shield, let them try to open and pull it out.
Another thing I did is while trying to turn the key on without letting the GP's glow I bumped the starter as quick as I could and (only two injectors were out) both heat shields flew out and landed on the floor.
I use a long wood screw, screw it into the hole and grab the head with visegrips and pull straight out.
