Radiator
« on: August 22, 2010, 02:03:38 pm »
My 1981 1.6n/a has a screw down type of radiator which has tested bad from the pressure test that was administered.  I have leaks around the neck of the plastic upper male pipe where the upper radiator hose attaches too.  I have removed the A/C system from the vehicle including the condenser.  Is the best option to go with the same style radiator or are there other options.  I would like a bigger radiator especially because I don't have that condenser in the way, it's just that I have the screw down type mount and I think that might limit the size and type of radiator I can install.  If the stock radiator is my option, I guess I'll order one from Autohausaz.com.  Thanks.

I think unless you're going custom or willing to walk the junkyards looking for other options, what's available is what's available.

I looked around a while ago and everything was plastic endtanks.  I have an old one with metal tanks and may hold onto it, just to see what it would cost to get refurbed.

RockAuto sells a nice one. It's made of firm aluminum (not the paper-thin stuff). I forget who the manufacturer is, but it looks nice. All new ones have the plastic tanks.

525 MM LONG WITH FILLER NECK
171121253FZ  radiator

545 MM NO FILLER NECK, YOU WILL USE 7.5 MM HOSE TO RESV TANK
Hose 7.5 443121107A

171121253BA
radiator
Both have screw down type mounts

568 MM Lower pin Mounts,No Screw's
171121253CL

Option's

you can go to a 675 mm  Long 16V Scirocco 1988 Year or 1991 Jetta MK11 1.6 Type

Longer, better cooling less money
191121251CZ  Radiator 78.10
use upper hose 191121101AK 46.10

Uses your same shroud MK1 caddy ,two pin fan

The larger 16v uses two different radiator coolant hose, different from stock MK1
191121051P 7.87 lower hose
191121101AB  Upper hose 15.00
This model will use 7.5 mm hose from radiator overflow to resv tank

Iam going this route also, converting to a two speed fan, using 16v rad and shroud with a a/c the upper and lower hoses, no nipple on radiator for overflow
it's built in the upper hoses, new hose cost 95.10 16 v scirocco
or jetta mk II 1.6 Upper 46.10

This a new production part for me in silicone

Let me know
