AAZ engine death
« on: December 15, 2005, 02:52:24 am »
Well, my 93 1.9 Td AAZ died the other day, was acting funny a day earlier, dropping revs and so forth.  Went out in the morning to start it and the starter wasnt turning over the top end.

Sure enough the crank pulley had sheared its key but the crank keyway didnt look badly damaged, a bit rounded on one side only.  Sought advice from a VW specialist and they suggested trying a new pulley, which was only £30 odd with new bolts.

I did this and timed her up and she started first turn and ran fine.

Then developed a horrible top end rattle, but still ran.  The car was always very slow on pull-away so i tried the old turning up the fueling which really transformed it and it ran sooooo well for the few miles i drove it on a test.

Parked her up.  got back in a few hours later, started ok, then whilst sat in traffic started missing again and smoking like a b4stard and rattling/knocking.  Got her home and now nothing, wont start, tries to but wont run.

ARGH!

Hate this car!

Reckon its just sheared the pully again?

Anyone want to buy a Windspr blue met 93 golf td dirt cheap?

The crank pulley key sheared and you replaced it without pulling the head to check the valves? Thats asking for disaster. If  a valve gets slightly bent when the engine goes out of time, chances are the engine will run, but not for very long. The bent valve gets "straightened" each time it hits the seat and eventually fails due to fatigue. The head drops off and destroys the motor.

If you are really lucky all that happened is the pulley came loose again. Get the crank repaired, remove the head and replace any bent valves. If you're not lucky, a valve head fell off and you need to look for a new engine.

Too late, thats probably what happened, was ticking bad before it died.

Ran awesome with more turbo boost and fueling!

Oh well, driving the mk2 16v now which is much better!

A sad ending, another one for the crusher.
