Car in question is a Volvo 242, yes, I do know of the D24T, however, I have not had any luck finding one.
The 1.9TDI is interesting, however, cheapest I can find one complete is $3200 (USD)
Current petrol motor is rated at: 101hp @ 5250, with 111ft lb @ 2500
Car weighs 2800+ pounds (empty)
Yes, I know the engine is 90° "wrong direction", but no big deal with a little bit of cutting and welding to adapt it to drive the rear wheels via a RWD transmission.
thanks
I don't know of a bell housing that exists for fitting a VW 4 cyl up to a RWD trans. I find it hard to beleive you can't find any diesel Volvos floating around. I saw one last time I was at the wrecking yard and I see them there every few months. Sometimes they're turbo, sometimes not. But, my thought would be the 5 and 6 cyl engines probably have the same bolt pattern and whatnot for the bell housing so why not use a 5 cyl diesel engine out of a Eurovan? It would be pricey but you might be able to import a 5 cyl TDI engine. That has to be more powerful and reliable than the 6 cyl diesel.
there is a company adapting toyota pickup (2wd & 4wd) transmissions as well as Suzuki Samari...more of an FYI since I don't plan on going that route....
I've got a pretty decent machine shop at home and I'm not too afraid to make "chips"

To be honest, I have not tried too hard to locate the Volvo (VW designed) diesel, I'm quite dissapointed in the lack of mid-sized diesel engines in the US, I can find tons of overweight (overkill for my app.) V8 truck engines all day long for dirt cheap (bang head on wall)
I do wish someone imported more than just the typical honda/subaru gas engines from overseas.....
That Volvo diesel is more than just VW designed, it IS a VW engine
Why not just swap in a Cummins 5.9? That'd make that car move...nevermind the size issue

haha... it would be a beast!!! might as well tune the transmission for idle rpm's. i wonder if it would save on fuel?
www.acmeadapters.com1.6td, 1.9td, 1.9tdi all same bolt pattern, you can bolt up a Toyota w56 transe. You can swap in some 4x4 stuff if you wanted

I wouldn't do the little Suzuki trans for anything bigger than building a diesel MG or something.
I was running 180ft/lb from my 1.9 AAZ engine before I tore it apart for refurbishing. Main modifications were, KKK K24 turbo with a big downpipe and freeflow exhaust, big intercooler and some pumptweaking. (OEM injectors/pumpcamplate)
So 200ft/lb is not out of reach I think
I think your best bet (if you can't find a Volvo/VW six) would be a Nissan Maxima diesel six. I see those come up every once in a while, and they're supposed to be a pretty good engine. If you swap engine and trany into the Volvo, shouldn't be too hard to do.
Oh, that engine was also used in some International Scouts here in the United Snakes.
Five banger MB driveline might fit as well. Those are really easy to find here in the N.E. as the bodies tend to disolve long before the motors give out

Mike, go to
Craigslist and search on 'volvo diesel' under 'cars & trucks' in the For Sale section. There are several Volvo diesels for sale right now...maybe you can something that fits your needs.
