Diesel motorcycle anyone?
« on: May 28, 2010, 06:30:32 pm »
I don't ride but a diesel bike might lure me over to the two-wheeled crowd.

I would be all over a diesel bike, I am a diesel nut, and a motorcycle freak!

but I would want the bike to be more capable off road than that pig would be...

Kawasaki makes a KLR military diesel bike. I'd like one , but bike insurance here is ridiculous.

yeah, but even the KLR is too road oriented for me(road bikes are cool, but if you are going to ride something offroad, it might as well be really capable)

a small aircooled diesel motor would kick some serious butt on a motorcycle.

and as far as insurance goes, I pay less for the whole year on my bike than I do for a single month on my car.

Kawasaki doesn't make it, a small american company does. The chassis is Kawasaki but the engine is designed and built by HDT. The picture above is the civilian version of the USMC KLR.

I built a myself a diesel motorcycle the winter before last. I used an old Yamaha 400 frame, which I had to cut and modify in the engine area. I bought a 416cc, 10hp Chinese Yanmar clone from Princess Auto. Drive is through a Comet 40 series CVT, or belt frive torque converter. I had to play around with different size sprockets to get the gear ratio right, but it rides great now! Top speed is only 80kmh, but I'm guessing I get somewhere around 150mpg. I run it on home made biodiesel, so it basically costs nothing to ride. Not sure how to post a pic, but I will if I can figure it out.

LOVE IT !!!!!!!
My new desktop background.

The screaming DIESEL call out decals put it over the top and above the crowd.

It aint a Harley, or a full MX machine - but i've got those.
The big plastics just make it look heavy. I bet its pretty well nimble enough compared to most other dual-purpose bikes.

Not saying i'd pay the coin a new one probly costs.
But when depreciation takes full effect - i'd give 1500 for one easy.
Thanks for the picture. Awesome.

http://thekneeslider.com/archives/2005/02/25/thunder-star-1200-diesel-by-star-twin/

Star-Twin made the first "super-bike" with diesel power, though I don't know where they are with it now, that article is about 5 years old.

Thunder Star uses a redesigned 3-cylinder VW TDI engine, up to 120 hp in a 450 lb bike.  Ya-hoo!

It is, I love Harleys for the sound, so does my GF. and her dad would be disgusted because it doesn't sound like one. He has a harley with a 103Cubic Inch motor and it sounds amazing.

you could make a diesel that sounds like a harley no problem.

just base the motor on the harley motor, 30* v-twin with a shared crank journal.
then leave off the turbo, and you have a diesel harley that sounds like a harley!

My thoughts exactly. I always assume that those harley guys just can't get it up.
