Varible Geometry turbo's..again !
« on: December 03, 2005, 01:23:21 pm »
Guys,

Got a real good deal on eBay for a 4000 mile VW GOLF mk5 2.0LTDI PD complete turbo unit. Its turbine housing is 1 cast with the manifold.

I havent received it yet but I assume its the VNT 17, maybe not though.

Quite simply, I would like to know the best way to operate the mechanism on an engine with no ECU operated vacuum system.

I know this has all been covered by others before, but i'll lost track of the different ways to do it.

Jake, how did you get got results on the 1.6 VNT conversion ? Is it driveable and reliable ?

My little Jetta Eco took a pretty big hit the other day when it hit ice on the road, its not repairable, so its going to be my new test rig for things like this, before fitting over to 1.9's.

Look forward to any comments.

Regards, DM

The VNT conversion turned out great!  It worked like a charm.

How I did it is covered in pretty good detail this mega-thread:

And there is some additional info on the tuning results here:

However the engine had some problems with a leaking headgasket before the VNT was added, and this problem has just recently returned.  It also has a buggered crank thrust surface we discovered, so any fix will likely be temporary until a new longblock can be prepared to swap in.  The next step though is to install a multi-layer steel headgasket to see if that fixes the headgasket leak for good, and see how many miles we can squeeze out of the buggered crank thrust.  When the car runs though, it drives just great - there is a wide usable powerband that makes it very easy to drive, and it consistently returns low 50's miles per gallon.
