Hi,
Im getting ready to install the flywheel on my 1.9 AAZ with a 02A transmission. Im stumped. Is there suppose to be a shim between the flywheel and crank, or on the outside under the flywheel bolt heads? Looking at the flywheel, i see an imprint of what seems to be a shim, but its on the inside between the flywheel and crank face. I also dont remember taking it off when I tore the engine down....
Thanks
Ed

ive never seen a shim between a crank and flywheel, except on a toyota 22r engine equipped with an auto trans. usually they go between the bolts and FW.

It's not really a shim....but kinds of looks like a metal gasket...it comes in any clutch kit and you can probably order it separately.
It's shaped in the same pattern as the bolt holes on the flywheel flange, so only goes on one way. I've never understood exactly what it's used for.
But it's always been there on all the VW clutches I've done.

it goes between the bolts and the pressure plate then.

Vince's dumb post about non-02A trannys deleted, since the OP has stated he's installing an 02A.

Ed has a 02A though so it is in fact the flywheel that bolts to the crank.

I've never understood exactly what it's used for
Doesn't it stop the bolts from vibrating loose? and also spreads the load over the bolts to help keep it even when tightening...

'KATE' refers to the shim as being a compensating disk for automatics.

I asked Giles about it as he also has a 02A and he doesn't remember his car having one.

None on an 02J either, so perhaps it got discontinued when they went with the more conventional flywheel -> pressure plate arrangement.
