how bad of a leak is this?
« on: April 22, 2010, 05:08:34 pm »
so I was trying to track down an oil leak the other day in my 1.9td and noticed my coolant looked a bit low. I made a note to investigate when I had a bit more time, and the very next day my low coolant light came on.

so this is what I found:
http://i44.tinypic.com/2mmgtv7.jpg (sorry, rotate 90 degrees)

for a better angle, on another site: http://www.brainhotel.org/vanagon/engine_codes.png its the connector for the hose marked A (not my car, clearly).

loose clamp, or tragedy afoot? (this week I've already dealt with my clutch going, fuel leak, potential oil leak, and now coolant - ***ty ***ing week).

ideally, I'd like a quick diagram if anybody has one, of the coolant system, since I haven't actually looked at this on the td yet.

okay, so having done a bit of research, what I'm looking at is the head cylinder coolant flange, and this is probably an o-ring or the flange itself warping (??) that needs to be changed.

my next question is, can this in any way be related to an oil leak? O_o

It's probably your o-ring, yes. And no, that can't really be related to an oil leak.

is it worth replacing the whole flange since I'm already doing this? they appear to be regarded as "common failure points" online, but it looks like a fairly solid part to me.

Yup... they jus loves to warp... and they aren't much more expensive than the o-ring.  You'll need to partially drain the cooling system.. or move very fast.   ;)
