I resealed my 1.9 pump on the motor this week.  I replaced all the seals easily done (head, top plate, the seal in the LDA, throttle, electronic advance, front seal).  But I didn't pull the pump.  The car starts fine but drips until warm.  I've traced it down to the cold advance on the back of the pump.  Any way I can replace that seal without tearing everything apart?  I think I might be able to get a torx bit in there and buy a 1/4" gear wrench and back the studs out.  Just not sure if there's a spring in there like the other side.  Or if the studs are long.

Tried tinkering a bit, but it looks like I'll have to pull it.  I'm experementing with the other old seal for now to see if a mix of diesel and engine oil stop leak softens up the seal.  So far it seems to have softened it a bit.  Since it's starting without a bit of issue, I'm going to give a quart of this stuff a try in the tank.

Yeah there's no real way to get to it without pulling the pump... and you're discovering the classic "once the seals start to go they all go in pretty quick succession" since the 100+ psi internal pressure will be forever probing the defenses.

Best to yank 'er out and do the full meal deal.

Every seal has been replaced except for that one.  I should have done it while I had everything torn apart.  (I'm kicking myself for not doing it!) The other advance seal wasn't cracked or anything.  Just "dry".  It starts without issue, and I just went outside and started it back up (wasn't hot, but wasn't cold) and no leaks.  I'm just going to keep an eye on it and give this oil stop leak a shot.  I know running it all the time would be bad since it kind kills the seals.

Haven't decided on what I'm going to do with the car.  I need to find out what kind of mileage it can pull.  I really wanted a Jetta, but found a deal on this one I couldn't pass up.

Your can do that seal with ease if its on the bench and cold start side face up.
Mark the shaft and arm, unscrew the fasteners and replace the seal.
I think its one of the easiest seals to do.

How did you replace the governor shaft o-ring with the pump installed?

Removed the pump top.  I also replaced the seal in the LDA.  Gawd I hate that seal.  I had to replace it in my 1.6TD pump.  This one was even worse since it had the forced BB's to prevent removal.  I ended up milling around it until half way down.  Then I tapped it out.

The pump head, I cheated on.  I had the car sitting higher on the drivers side.  Then pulled two of the bolts out and slowly backed off the head until I could see the seal.  Then replaced the seal swapping bolts.
