Hey everyone, after waiting weeks to finally register with this site, here I am! I purchased a 1985 1.6L IDI NA Diesel Jetta Coupe. I love it.
Upgraded the injection pump to a Giles Performance Pump, replaced timing belt, new tensioner, all new vbelts, new glow plugs and she is runnin' right. I didn't do any tuning with the max fuel screw or the idle. The car idles at 1100 RPMs (I know this because I have a proper vw diesel tach), is this too high? Should I adjust down? If I do adjust should I do it while the car is running?
Also, the max fuel screw, since the Giles Pump I haven't really experienced anymore power. Flooring first gear one time I had a huge cloud of smoke. Could my max fuel screw be up to high? Would this decrease performance? Should I adjust for less fuel? What is the best way to tune?
Thoughts from the group would be awesome!

There is no harm in turning the idle screw down while the car is running.
you could also achieve the same effect by turning the fuel screw out as well.
I'm not a NA guy so i have no idea how anyone is expected to make even semi-decent power/efficiency with lots of fueling on an NA without the presence of Oxygen. Either turbo, NOS or ... i dunno some fancy sort of ram-air-cowel... hood scoop... intake apparatus.

I installed a built pump to my 1,9 NA and it is already faster than my ex ´96 Passat 1Z TDI

Yep, it smokes like h*ll, leaves black stripe to snow... Still otherwise stock, but not for long...
When you installed the pump what timing value did you set it to?
I think about 0.96mm. The spec for setting it was 0.95mm iirc.
Ok well, I will ask more questions: Is it bad to have the temp gauge this high? It runs fine but, the light is blinking.
the blinking light should indicate low coolant; temp seems at just about 1/2 way which is normal. 1100 rpm is high for idle, but i don't even have a tach...
as mentioned you can adjust the idle stop while its running, no harm.
Yeahup coolant is topped off, belt is tensioned, not sure if it could be a temp sensor?
Replace all your sensors at the same time , My fan switch finally went bad, stock 81
I installed all new cables, while i was doing the speedo cable, I replaced the instrument bulbs ( lamp )
