Which belt?

...and how did you tension it, and what did the pulleys look like, and why did the old one explode?

Yeah, whats the condition of the pullies? If they have a nick or scrape on the contact surface, they will chew up belts.

I'm going out on a limb and assuming we're talking about the '93 1.9TD in your sig line.  If so, then it has the serpentine belt setup.  Assuming you got the correct number of grooves on your serp belt, then the most likely suspect is worn out bushings for the tensioner arm or a broken tensioner spring.

I'm with Andrew on this one... If it does not squeel again, maybe you got lucky or its slipping so much it is not making the noise. Since it stopped, have you checked the tension ? You should be able to turn the motor a little by turning the fins on the alternator, the tensioner spring will keep a constant tension without kills the bearings in the water pump and alternator from being too tight.

What fins on the alternator? Do u mean by turning the belt? But ill check the tension of the belt.
