Which belt?
I'm going out on a limb and assuming we're talking about the '93 1.9TD in your sig line. If so, then it has the serpentine belt setup. Assuming you got the correct number of grooves on your serp belt, then the most likely suspect is worn out bushings for the tensioner arm or a broken tensioner spring.

If it does not squeel again, maybe you got lucky or its slipping so much it is not making the noise. Since it stopped, have you checked the tension ? You should be able to turn the motor a little by turning the fins on the alternator, the tensioner spring will keep a constant tension without kills the bearings in the water pump and alternator from being too tight.
