tranny questions, about the 020

I know next to nothing on these trannies. I have basically focused the entirety of my knowledge and brainpower on the engine. I know that my engine will rev fast and higher than stock setups, so the question is how to take advantage of the torque and power that will be available. I have a very rudimentry understanding o gear ratios and have sought out an 020 tranny with close gears I found here:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=523552I also know that to go anywhere far I want to have a highway cruising gear that is fairly long and as of yet have no Idea on anything. FYI, I will be putting all of this under the trunklid of an 01' MR2 Spyder, in an MR setup with the engine and tranny facing the same direction, this will certainly take some doing, and I will need the tranny and engine+mounts to make the correct measurements. Any help on this particular front will be helpful as well.... like say....... arb, or anyone else who has put a diesel in anything but a vw.
thanks,
Kevin

truckenwagen speaks the truth. I don't think anyone knows more about the 020 than broke.
Here's another good site about 020 gear ratios:

I don't think the 020 will handle all the power your engine is gonna put to it.
IIRC Dave's build a few years ago (190ish HP) went thru two 020's in about a week.

In Japanese, I would say "Komata na" This is quite the conundrum, I want a tranny that can handle the power and give me some quickness, the wide profile and low suspension geometry of the spyder will give me excellent traction, as well as the spectacular tires that I have put on it. The good news is that my car will be that much fasdter with out the added weight of a tranny.

Which tranny can I use, I project power to be in the 300 HP range, and that is a modest estimate, as well as having close to 400 ftlbs not 450. Is there anything out there for me? I would love to use a lim slip diff, but all of that power will exlode one of those in a heartbeat. Should I just go out for a getrag "for those not saavy, this is the transmission for the 2jz toyota supra transmission, stock it is good to about 1000 hp, no joke" LOL

so is there a tranny that will handle the power that I will throw at it? Without exploding? These numbers are no Joke, I really plan on doing this, and making this a reality. Without a transmission My car will have like waaaay more horsepower, you know, like mega weight reduction, that's like what, 100 pounds of weight LOL!

I doubt these tranny's are much over 50lbs.

the big weak spot in the 020 is the ring gear rivets.
if you replace the rivets with the special ring gear bolts they can hold plenty of power, and I would recommend an LSD if you want any kind of traction at all with all that power.
I like the Wavetrac diff, it not only is the cheapest LSD for our cars, but works better too, you can get them from Bildon Motorsport.

I know absolutely nothing about transmissions, any info? I need pictures folks I want to learn, but don't know where to go to school on vw trannies

I need to learn to I have learned everything els eabout these cars/engines but know next to nothing on gearing and how the transmission works. Once I wrap my brain around something and have a firm grasp there is no letting go. I will look at Howstuffworks but I need particulars on this mission, in otherwards the 020, or is there a more suitable alternative. Also thanks on the advice on the diff, an LSD would be just superb,as opposed to a torque biased for lots of power and traction. I have wider bigger tires on the spyder, I have the 03'+ style rims which have larger wider in the front to give it a good profile and better traction. I'll post up some pics sometime.
thanks,
Kevin
