I dont understand why?
« on: March 08, 2010, 05:46:48 pm »
Im having probs with my car starting when not plugged in over night, even in this mild 5-10c temps, i checked to see if the plugs are getting voltage and they are, i have a new water pump and alternator lol prob less than 500kms, but car even takes a bet to start even while pluged in, im thinking maybe the starter but not sure, do u have any ideas?

Just because the plugs are getting power doesn't mean they are good. Does the starter sound fast or does it struggle after a couple seconds? Do you have any smoke out the exhaust? There's several possibilities for hard starting when sitting a while. Does it start fine when it's warmed up?

Without knowing anything else, I vote glow-plugs.  Finally changed mine last fall, was so bad that it would take forever to start anytime the temp got down into single digits.  All 4 were bad.  After change, starts after 1/2 rotation (on warmer days).

A voltage drop test may also be in order

The car starts up right away when the car is up to temp.

shouldn't you be at school  ;D

Ok something of use lol. My 97 AAZ was doing the same thing yours is doing. New Battery, New GP's, New starter, Replced the altenator and it was still hard starting at first. and Idled really rought at first.

When you pull the cold start out, does the idle settle down right away or does it still run rough?

Mine the pump was starting to go.

When i pull the cold start out,it does settle down right away the ca sounds as if it changes tone, i started it just a min ago and it took a bit to get going without the CS pulled, but it did settle down after.

i vote glow plugs too. did you actually visually check to see that the tips are getting red hot? just because there is power to the end does not mean the tip is getting hot.

Maybe fuel supply issues? - when's the last time the filter has been changed?? Could the timing be out - have you or anyone done any work on the pump lately??
Check the glows first of coarse, take them out and if they are working I'd start with the fuel filter as it could be plugged.
If you can't take advice - then you can't be helped!

The car starts up right away when the car is up to temp.

Which tells you your fuel system, timing, etc are probably close enough.

All things being equal, cold starting is about compression and... you guessed it... your glow plugs.   ;)

Use a wrench to loosen the nut, but leave it attached to the buss bar. Then use a wrench to remove the plug from the head. Buss bar makes a handy tool to swing everything out and back in..............

Remove the injection lines. Keep them as a set if they still have the clamps on them.

If you move the fuel lines, its 10 times easier then dicking around, and about 40 times faster.
