Another "What The Best" Turbo Question.
« on: February 19, 2010, 08:41:32 am »
The K14 turbo on my 1.9 IDI may have a seized waste gate - so I maybe looking at repair or replacement. I've read a few things on turbo's on here but I couldn't find anything that suits my question. What would be a good upgrade if any for me, I'm looking for mostly city performance as I am not a real highyway racer. I already have a giles pump, larger exhaust and shortly will be installing an intercooler. Engine's good with less than 60K since rebuild.
Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks.

How much boost are you running?

I'm not all that savvy on turbo's or waste-gates let alone safe boost limit's, but I am trying to learn as I go. With the new pump I've hit 20 + easily.
Not sure if this is what you mean??

The K14 probably won't last all that long at 20PSI.  Do you have an EGT gauge?

I do - and that's why I'm thinking of upgrading.

IMO a good upgrade for you would be a T3 due to the same exhaust mani flange... you would however have to fab/modify the oil return line for the T3.

i've been running a T3 on my AAZ for well over 60000 km @ 25+ psi with no problems at all.

Thanks for the response. Lots of choices and prices on the T3. How about the K24 I know it's outdated but any good as a choice?
I did some reading on the GARRETT GT28RS, GT2860RS Turbo's. Maybe that would be a better route.

Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Not to hijack, but I have the same problem...the only way I can  remove the wastegate on my k14to un-stick it is to take the turbo off, which might or might not happen before I wreck the turbo...I have a k-03 with a manifold that needs a rebuild. Does this turbo compare to the spooling abilities of the k-14?, or should I look for something better...I don't have my pump turned up, but I do have a fairly unrestricted exhaust, and I  can hit 20+ in 2nd....

a K03 is stupid, they are all out of boost by like 4000 rpms. and about ready to explode at 20 psi.

K03 has immediate boost...
great for in town driving.
K14 is a comprimise between city and highway.
K24 -T3`s aer great if you have a giles pump as he would have done teh govenor mod which now can supply the T3 with the revs required for spooling it.

Where are you in ontario? I`ll trade you a T3 for your old K14.
I run a sidekick so my needs are different then yours...
