Well, I now don't think it was a tappet, I have explained to the ladyfriend what that funny red light and buzzing noise meant, (you drove it how far?) 20 miles, hmm. Took about a gallon to get anything on the dipstick, yup, abosobloodylutely zero oil in it. Runs on three now, with scary orchestra of destroyed bearing knocks, so tis dead, full of oil a couple of days ago, so just curious as to the most likely post mortem mechanism of death. My bet is on piston break up, or maybe turbo oil seal failure, but there was no runaway. Don't panic as the engine is definately dead, I'm just curious as to how it ate all the oil so as to commit suicide.  ???

because sometimes a runaway does not run out of oil or lock up before it comes apart and sends bits flying very fast in all directions.

Hope you wern't too traumatised by the poor Landy eating itself.
Tried the poor thing this evening, it's snowing, it eventualy started, WOW suprised! But big clouds of oil smoke and four big ends knocking out God Save The Queen, It's doomed. Should be fun for a final drive of death to see what gets given birth to out of the block. AA relay card in my pocket. 8)

Just for the curious or gormless, red light and buzzer means STOP AND ADD OIL PLEASE!  ::) ::) ::) :P

If it were dead, it would not be "knocking on Heaven's door", or would it?

Just change the lower end bearings, don't even have to take it out of car.

Agree. These things take a lot to kill em, and if it's still running.. you didn't give it that much ;)

I'd bet on the crank and rods being seriously out of whack.. Yeah these things are tough, but they have their limits... The engine I rebuilt for the Bunny had a spun rod bearing from less than a few miles of being run low on oil..  Big end of the rod was somewhat oval shaped, the crank is now bolted to the back of my golf cart for ballast..

Going by your previous posts about the tappity tap tap tap also leads me to think a piston decided it wanted to be somewhere else.. The tapping might have been a crack in the piston around the wrist pin (gudgeon pin I think you call them over there?)  And if that is indeed what happened I'd guess that particular cylinder is none too pretty either...

Then again, stranger things have happened..  Send it over here, I'll weld it up!  ;D

It's the 1600 intercooled SB engine from 1990 ish. It was shagged when I bought it 100,000 miles ago, my first diesel, so I got a bit stitched up. But it has soldiered on fine since, but has always been thirsty for oil, and lumpy compressions, but never got worse till the mystery tapping started up. So I bought a better one, but the girlfriend isn't allowed near that one,

You brave? or need parts?
