Going TDI in MK2

I'm either going mTDI or if i find a parts car mkIII i'll swap it all over to electronic. The IDI dropped a valve and i have wanted to go TDI so i guess now is the time.

I figured. They cost more. Having a hard time finding a complete engine for less than 1500. Even harder time finding a head. I found some short blocks or cars with bad heads. But think it will be worth it in the long run.

Yeah finding one for a decent price is the trouble.  I bought on of mine in boxes for $500 and rebuilt it which ended up costing way more in the long run but it should run forever.  My other one I paid $1700 for with a transmission but very complete. 
Mine is an e-tdi.  Its pretty much plug and play after I swapped in a CE2 harness.  I have a friend that has a 1Z or AHU head for sale, he has injectors also.  I think he wanted ~$300 for the head, I can get you his contact info if you want.

K sounds good. I'm curently unemployed but wer should be starting back up in march. plus i'll be getting some tax money back soon too. I found a 97 TDI that i planned to swap anything and everything needed for eTDI. My car is a CE1 so i may swap all MKIII stuff in it.

I'm in the middle of doing this exact swap too. After talking with many folks about mTDI vs TDI I think it's worth the extra hassle for the benefits you gain. I've got a complete b4 donor setup going into an unmolested mk2 CE2 Car. I've been using G60ing's (at TDICLUB) list of parts and working with his Passat b4 diagrams but making little real progress. The only hard part as far as I've found is the wiring. There's surprisingly little detail or discussion on it, so I'm on a mission to change that.

For planning purposes I like to have a strategy laid out before I tear into a job. ex. "Plan to use both engine and lighting harness, and leave original AC/Fan harness intact". And it's nice to have some additional information without having to reinvent the wheel (read every single track on the wiring diagram for both cars).

Plugging in all of the connectors into the back of a CE2 fusebox is a piece of cake of course, the Bentley tells you what function each position on the box handles, but that's not all there is to this swap wiring wise.
The problems I'm facing in the swap are:

-there are lots of little wire connectors (not actual CE2 fusebox connectors) that seem to have no home, and it would be great to account for the ones you DO and DON'T need.

-I still haven't figured out what to do for cruise control wiring, the mk2 column harness seems to be an albatross, it's pretty integrated into the hvac harness. as far as I can tell it's not as simple as "plug the passat harness into the mk3 column connectors".

-I'm having trouble with the OBD2 port connector. Specifically trying to figure out exactly what grey / white wire to connect into (there seem to be more than one).

-I've also heard of a wire that needs to be jumped in the fusebox to use a mk3 cluster with the b4 harness, I'd like to identify that.

On top of answering my own questions I'd like to make some good documentation from my swap and make some recommendations on doing wiring the "easy way". In other words, come up with a list of things you need to deal with to get everything working for the most common swap (B4-> Mk2CE2).

I went through the trouble of studying and organizing wiring from the early TDI for my mk1, but decided to go mTDI instead.  I figured I would have just about as much power out of the box for a whole lot less work.

I know mTDI is far easier, but I always hear about how easy TDI to CE2 swap are, so that's the blood I was trying to draw out of the stone here.

CE1 is a whole different ballgame.

I'm all about electronic fuel injection for gas and have been all mechanical for diesel. I'm changing that i want the luxury of computer tuning, Cruise control, etc.

I have to finish my mk3 tdi rebuild then find a donnor B4. The MK3 was to be a swap car but it turned out to have low miles and a valve to piston meeting so fixing that then on to my MK2 cause i want "my car" I perfer the MKII body.

Make sure you open up the frame rail for timing belt changes. Other than that mechanically you can just drop the k frame and suspension and bolt in a mk3 engine assembly.  The radiator and lights wiring is a little different, but not bad.  The hardest part is taking the time to do it.

I highly suggest before taking both cars apart to lable every wire and sensor AND take pictures with the notes so if you get stuck you have a way to follow up on it.

anyone got pics of what modding needs to be done to the chassis rail/leg when fitting the TDI into the Mk2??

I'm dreading the wiring as i've only messed with TD's before!! hopefully a better guide is on TDI club when i come around to it!!

you dont need to mod the  chassis rail/leg to do the timming belt , well not on my two mk2s or my seat/polo
