Author Topic: homebuilt hybrid turbo? (Read 4071 times)

I have a few turbos around that i was planning on making a hybrid with. i have a t3 and a t4 and i wanted to put the t4 compressor on the t3 bearing and turbine. it all bolts up but i was told that the balance will be off and the turbo wont even last 5 minutes. i also read on one site that the wheels are balanced seperatly and that you can put them on however you want and they will be balanced?
it makes more sense that the turbo will need to be rebalanced but is this true? if so how much to rebalance a turbo?

I get all my turbos rebuilt at ADP here in BC. I get new bearings and a polished and balanced shaft. I would not rebuild a turbo without balancing it. New bearings may be better than no rebuild but still kind of half assed. Its like getting new piston rings and not honing your bores.

I would also like to know how that turbo balancing is done. And also what is there to balance when shaft is centered with bearings? Does anyone have any pictures or knows some web sites that explains turbo balancing?

considering the turbo spins in excess of 100,000 rpm, even the slightest imbalance would lead to early bearing failure.

You have a special balancing machine that is accurate to like 1000th of gram or something like that. They get the shaft and put a wheel on and balance that and mark the position, than they do the same thing for the other side and when they put the turbo back together they postion everything back to where it was marked. It is very important that this id done because of the high rpm of the turbo as stated by dr.diesel. I would discourage just reinstalling the bearings and calling it good. It will work sometimes but not all the time.

I have no idea, I am sure if you doa search on google you could find something or check the yellowpages. I am pretty lucky to have a shop where I do. There is a machine shop, good parts suppliers, cam grinder, turbo rebuilder, dyno etc. all less than 20 minutes away.
