Had a nice fellow deliver parts to me today for my 1981 pickup project. Bought bunch of stuff from him ... heater unit for non a/c, alternator bracket for non a/c, injectors with less than 5k miles on them, timing tool kit, compression gauge ... in other words, a plethora of items ... some free and others at extreme low cost. While much of the parts are used, they are in nice condition, as are the tools, hoses, cables, etc.. He recently had the unfortunate experience of loosing control on black ice and skidded into something at the rf fender area. No injuries, and just enough damage to the body to discourage him from repairing everything ... and is now parting out the pickup. Had, 30k miles ago, rebuilt most of the drive train, along with replacing other items ... injectors, hoses, cables, glow plugs, etc. about 5k ago.
Now my need. While he was taking the a/c heater unit out from under the dash ... even took the dash out for me ... he pointed out that where the accelerator cable is attached to the foot pedal, thru a circular item of about a dime size, there is a 'thingie' that the cable is stuck thru, and the setup is inserted to the circular hook mentioned above. He said that often times folks, like me, aren't aware of this non-descript item going bad, and winding up with the driver not having full usage of the entire throttle range.
This item is, again, about the diameter of a dime, thickness of about 1/2 inch, with a small hole in the middle where the 90 degree bend at the end of the cable is inserted ... and appears to have been originally some sort of cork material ... just my interpretation.
Over time, as mine has, it dries out, and with the pressure pull from the throttle cable, it gets deteriorated ... as mine has. He indicated that VW 'should' have made it of rubber, or other material that does not deteriorate that rapidly.
Question is ... does anyone know what this is called or part number and/or where they can be ordered.

Mentioned it to the wife, and by doggie, within 3 minutes, she had found a VERY close match in a rubber foot that one finds on things like door stops, computer foot, etc.. I'm gonna put it into a cup of hot hot water and see if I can make it mailable enough to squeeze into the holding bracket at the upper end of the foot pedal.
Are your's dried out and brittle ... like mine. The explanation the fellow gave me, and it sure is plausible, is that if I did not know about it, that when it breaks apart from brittleness or age, that a certain amount of cable usage would not be available.

Other forums have posts that says the number I gave was the Audi version, and made of foam rubber ... but another part number is 191 721 559 ... and supposedly it is of a harder type of rubber. Incidentally, Impex has this version for 2.76 ... versus 13.47 for the Audi version.

I don't have the number but I just got one for a couple bucks recently when
I put the pickup back together.

The throttle pedal bushing for my Quantum was black, hard rubber... I had to lube it and use a mini C-clamp to install it.
I've read that the mk2 one is harder and is a direct fit.
beatrice, my cabby had no grommet at all where cable meets pedal and it'd just fall completely off at random, fun fix when driving down the road, ended up ziptying it about a dozen times to get it to stay til I actually found one in a baggie of parts that my uncle gave me for christmas, along with the NOS injectors, IP, and bolt through vent windows, and various and handy parts.... I seem to remember ordering one from GAP, about 2 years ago, as well, before I found the one he gave me. I'll dig through my parts and see if I can find any.

Gotta love reaching under the dash while driving!! Mine left go at rush hour in Baltimore.. I ended up pulling over and bending the piece on the end of the cable into a hook.. Been good for years like that.. Why VW engineers some things so well, and then something like this is beyond me..
