I would be far more worried about the cylinders being rusty than the displacement of the engine at this point...

No matter what, one or two valves would be open and the moisture could have traveled into the cylinders and rusted them the same as the oil filter surface.

SO, a few months ago, I started working on a diesel swap into the front side of this...


I got the engine from a VW tech in the Cleveland area who claimed it was a certified VW rebuild with roughly 8k on the clock and had been sitting for three years plugged up and covered in a barn.  I gave him $800 and was on my way.

I tried calling all over the place about the legitimacy of the "Cert. rebuild", but VW had nothing to say.  They're too enthralled in keeping the emkayfive and six owners happy.  I couldn't even get a phone number or any information from VWoC or VWoA.  However, seeing this one pop up, looking similar to mine, with a similar story makes me believe it a bit more.
