how would i go about checking to see if there is a signal coming from my W terminal?

also is there a way to wire up a CE2 rev counter to CE1 wiring? even if its just the rev counter that works?

i have the CE2 cluster and the plug that goes in to it, i've tried searching the net and i found some thing saying which colour wires to the cluster do what which said green was for the tacho and brown was earth. i tried wiring it straight up like this with the W going to the green wire on the cluster and the brown from it going to the earth but no sign of life on the tacho. are there any other wires that would need to be used other than the green and brown? are these even the correct wires?

Surprise! Check the output of the W terminal (engine running) with your multi-meter switched to "AC volts" function; 20 volts should be a sufficient range. Any indicated power is a good sign.

AFAIK the W input lead to the factory tach is orange.

i've got this working now just using a ground to the clocks and the W terminal wire to the correct one on the clocks.

when i first start it up the rev counter works fine for about a min, then if its on tick over the rev needle starts dropping down till it's registering no revs. if i gradually press the peddle down it stays on no revs then jumps up to 3k, if i carry on revving it higher it moves up very slowly and as soon as i let off the peddle the needle drops straight to the zero as if all power has been cut to the clocks.

has any one got any idea what this could be? it's just strange how it works fine briefly then starts playing up :-\

I had some behaviour somewhat like that when I had a corroded connection on my W terminal.  The other thing I've had that did something like that was a belt slipping that otherwise had no symptoms.

do an impedance test on the terminal connector. Usually it is the bad apple. Its an easy fix, just pull it apart, and clean it with electrical terminal cleaner (buy a small can from an electronics store) without the protector additive. Put it together again, and test. If you get the same result as before cleaning it, cut it out, and solder in a new connector. Before joining the new connector, put a dab of dielectric grease (spark plug grease), on the female side. If cleaning cures the issue, again a dab of dielectric grease on the female side before reconnecting.

my audi tach used to bounce around and not register right if it was wet out, or if there was too much load on the alt. belt slipped like a mother.

i thought this was the belt as it was really loose but i've tightened it and changed it and its still the same. i'll give the terminal a good clean if i get the time tomorrow.

thanks for the help
