On the MK2  020's there a little green sleeve like thing that drives into the trans case to hold the passenger axle flange seal..   I managed to bugger mine up when I changed the seal the last time..   Anyone have a part number, source, or even a proper name???

I bought mine for my 83 at Germanautoparts.com. Meistersattz number 020 498 085. It was called a drive flange seal kit and came with the oil seals as well. I believe they're the same.

Is this thing used to hold the seal in or for something for it to bottom on? I didn't notice one last time I changed the seals on my box

More or less it looks like an adapter sleeve..  It drives into the trans case, and the seal drives into this piece.. This particular trans came from an '85 Jetta..

Here's a pic I stole from Brokevw..

Some 020s have 'em, some don't... never heard any reliable explanation as to why.

My observation so far has been that it was only the later 020's with the spring behind the axle flange had this thing...  All my earlier (pre 83ish?) do not have this sleeve or the spring..

I'm finding all sort of pics, but no reference to a part number...  :-\

I suspect someone thought it was part of the seal, and drove it out..  They did manage to get it somewhat back in shape and gooped it with RTV but it still leaks a bit.. I didn;t make it much better when I changed the seal..  I'm doubtful that I could get one of these out of another trans and still have it be usable..  I guess worst case scenario I can maybe take one of my trashed trannies and swap that half of the case..  I've been considering a teardown and inspection anyways...

I must have had my head in dark places when I was looking earlier...  Looks like BrokeVW can get em..   Sounds like a good excuse to disect my trans and see if I'll need anything else..   Then on to the synthetic fluid so I can shift in the cold!  8)

I thought it was something do do with the "minislip" characteristic of the 020 trans. I'm sure you could find more specific info on the vortex or even im broke through there.

Exactly.  The anti-rattle spring added around 1983-84 extends the flange outward a small amount, so in order to have the seal ride on the correct part of the flange, they added the green cone to compensate.

I've had a hard time trying to remove the seal without bodging up the cone so I almost always order an extra if I'm doing a seal job.
