1.9 Liter AAZ turbodiesel engine
« on: October 11, 2005, 11:34:10 pm »
I plan to replace my 80,000 mi original diesel in my 1991 Jetta with an AAZ  1.9 LITER TURBODIESEL, bougt in 1998. AAZ is absolutely new and complete minus alternator.
Somehow nobody around, including dealers, know anything about this engine. I would like to know if parts for this engine and information (such as parts list) are available. Who has them?
Did anyone made this swap? The turbocharger installed on AAZ has a totally different flange. I made an adapter to the 1.6 liter turbodiesel  downpipe and this made it possible to use 1.6 liter turbodiesel exhaust.
Are any suggestions what I have to keep in mind? Will the existing 1991 JETTA cooling arrangement be sufficient?
Any info will be very appreciated.  Ark Mirvis

I've got one in my caddy with stock 1.6D radiator:

AFAIK the flange is no different from the 1.6TDs (T3 of K24 turbo) or 1.9TDs (T2 or K124), I replace the T2 with a K24 on my 1.9 and everything fitted except the oilline back tot he engine.

The AAZ is never been sold in the USA, but only in Europa and Canada.

A lot of parts are different then the 1.6TDs, but some can be swapped (injectors, tranny, manifolds, head, vacuumpump etc)

Sir,
Many thanks for valuable information. I have several questions and the answers will be VERY appreciated.

What is AFAIK?
What is T3, K24, T2 and K124?
What was difficult about OIL LINE you mentioned?

It is quite comforting to know that  1.6 diesel radiator will be sufficient for 1.9 AAZ TD.
Are the parts for 1.9 AAZ available in Europe?
What is your opinion on AAZ TD performance?

How many liters (average) of diesel fuel per 100 km AAZ TD  consumes?

Again my thanks.    Ark Mirvis

AFAIK = As far as I know...

T3, K24, T2 and K124 are all types of turbos that were used on turbo diesels from VW.   I believe the T2 / T3 types are Garrett's and the K24 is a KKK turbocharger.

You can buy parts for this engine here, in Canada.

As far as fuel consuption goes, you can go as low as 4.7 l/100 (50 mpg US) and sky is the limit if your foot is made of lead (I would say no more than 8 per 100 (30 mpg US).

Your A2 will feel peppy.

The Garrett T2 and KKK K14 are the small turbos used on the AAZ or on the ECO 1.6TD, the T3 and K24's are the bigger turbos used on the JR 1.6TD (and more USA variants)

The oilreturn that is on the turbo does not fit on the engine and vice versa so you will have to tie both ends together. I used a piece of heat and oil resistant hydraulic line between the end on the turbo and the other section of the engine.

I don't know what my AAZ drinks, I don't use it daily or to drive a long distances except meetings.

P:arts are availble overhere, from scrap engines to new parts.

My opinion on the performance, I dynoed 124.8hp/244Nm (~180ftlbs) last sunday so I'm content ;)

To all who responded to my post on 1.9 AAZ TD - my sincere thanks.
I am glad to be in the company of knowledgeable peoples and do hope to be very helpful soon.

Does anyone have the parts list on 1.9 liter AAZ turbodiesel?
I do plan to move to Portugal in a near future and the list can be for me (I am not very fluent in Portuguese) a salvation in case of need there.
I may also contact suppliers in Canada to get some spares. Can anyone give me a list of canadian places (preferably in Eastern Canada) doing VW parts mail order business.

I am fluent in German also.

   Ark Mirvis.
