1985 Jetta parts interchangeability

I have a 1985 VW Jetta and am looking for both headlights. Some of the parts places show that 1985 to 1992 will interchange but others show that 1986 to 1992 will interchange. How or where can I find out if 1985 or 1986 is the change year?

I used to use 85 stuff on my 88 as the parts car was an 85. If you look in pep boys for a headlight unit it is all the same Part# for the squarish headlights if they use a 9004 bulb.
